Try Mepis. I have been generally pleased with it, especially when I
periodically compare it to other distros. Most recently (on the release of
Ubuntu 6.06) I tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Mepis on my old ThinkPad 600E
laptop. Ubuntu and Kubuntu were a but twitchy, but Mepis 'just worked'.

Also, the Edimax USB WiFi ZD1201 based dongle I have just worked, the Dick
Smith 802.11b PCMCIA card just worked, and all the scripts seem to be set
up to play nice and do the right thing when you plug stuff in. If you need
to fiddle then install Kwifimanager. I know 802.11b is a bit old now, but
I don't have any 802.11g stuff to try.

Anyway, Mepis is both a live CD and installer, so you can easily burn a
copy and try it without affecting your current setup. Since Mepis uses the
Ubuntu repositories then if it *does* work you could maybe back-figure how
to tweak Ubuntu to do the same.

HTH,

Andrew
