I recommend and use apticron, a tool that will download any new packages
and send you a notification that includes details on the packages, the
changelog excerpt and so forth.

Very useful, and it makes sure that you know that an update is needed
without the risk of applying it automatically for you.  Because it
already downloaded the package you can upgrade without delays.
