In linux, generally ifconfig (if for interface)

The *BSD's will be similar, but give a different looking output.

You don't mention what sort of router you're using - is it working as  
a "proper" full modem, or as a half bridge? (Meaning that the IP  
address will actually be sitting on the machine itself)

Any easy way is simply to look at the output of a web page like  
http://www.whatsmyip.org/ or similar (google for others) - a word of  
warning, however, if you're behind a proxy (transparent or otherwise)  
you may not see you're real IP, but that of the proxy server.

You can check this by looking at the reverse DNS of the response (dig  
-x <ip address>) ... lot's of .nz ISP's have 'adsl' or similar in the  
name given.

Anyhow - that should provide a few points to you on your way...
