How about a real GSM modem? We used to deploy Siemens modems for our SMS
application long time ago back in Europe. IIRC it was model M20T at that
time - antenna pigtail on one end, serial on the other, SIM card tray on
the side. These were very good, reliable and actually designed to be
connected to the PC.

M20T is a history now but AFAIK the recent Siemens modem is type TC55 -
that can do both 900MHz and 1800Mhz, SMS, GPRS, and maybe even voice.

I could probably even share some bits of our old application if you were
interested in the low level AT command set to send and receive SMSs.
