As I understand it, GStreamer is the basis for most of GNOME's
multimedia stuff these days. It's basically a series of components /
plugins to do various things that you put together in a pipeline.

A simple pipeline might be something like

decode_mp3 -> output_alsa

or

decode_mp3 -> add_echo -> output_alsa

Etc. I'm not hugely familiar with it, but I think that's the general
idea. http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/ can probably tell you much more.
