I have a couple of Gigabyte/Nvidia motherboards.  One quirk I have seen is 
that the NIC can get into a state where it fails to transmit packets, and 
even a reset or warm boot doesn't fix it. However, power cycle does.

I haven't delved into it, but I think it is after dual booting windows XP, 
then restart and boot into Linux.
The NIC must run off standby power, in case WakeOnLan is desired.
