Someone suggested the router overheating was a problem.

I've just drilled around 15 holes in mine, and it appears to have fixed the
problem!

when I opened it up to make the holes, the caps were almost too hot to
touch. Luckily, they weren't bulging or leaking.

If my connection remains OK for a continued period of time, I'll repost my
continued success.
