Tried a little experiment today and thought you'd all be interested.
I have weaned work windows machines onto OO.o, Firefox, GIMP, and
Seamonkey for the staff who use email (clients use myway.com for email).
We have 5 boxes in a room for client use. I booted all 5 up into Knoppix
this morning to see how the clients fared.
The less adventurous found Firefox and OO.o straight away and just got
on with thier normal stuff. The more adventurous went exploring, one
ended up on KSudoku, one on Penguin Solitaire, and one on GIMP exploring
the new fonts for script-fu Logos. Resounding success. Only real issues:
1. Several copies of Mozilla, or OO.o all starting at the same time due
to slow CD starting.
2. No chance of getting the Network Minolta (Magicolor 2300DL) Laser
Printer set up before hand so nothing could be printed from the mornings
session.
In summary; we could in the near future swap reasonably painlessly to
linux if approval was given from on high and i can get a printer driver
to work. I'd probably need a test bed machine for pre-rollout update
approval but that would be my only additional expense.
