OK, got it going. So I'll post here for the benefit of anyone else. The fix is
to go into the BIOS and change the video memory settings. The video chipset
doesn't have _any_ memory of it's own, and so you need to steal it from
system memory. The default setting (I think it calls it UMA or similar) is
1Mb, which isn't enough. I think the windows drivers override it, but the
Linux ones don't (although a changelog said that it should from about 2003).
So in the BIOS you can up it to 8Mb. Then, all of a sudden, everything worked
at 1024x768, which was much better.
