For remote X on both fast and slow networks I have the best results with
NoMachine NX (http://nomachine.com). The NX core libraries are GPL and
used e.g. by FreeNX project.

This is a FAQ for NetBeans on NX but I suspect it could be the same issue:

The implementation of the shared memory extension sported by the nxagent
component doesn't provide, as of yet, support for shared pixmaps. The
"shared pixmaps" functionality is, in fact, part of the MIT-SHM X11
extension, but not a mandatory feature. Althought NX advertises that
such functionality is not available, some applications ignore the flag
and try to set up the shared pixmaps anyway.

To solve the problem it is enough to disable at startup the shared
memory extension in nxagent.
