What is the machine for? If you're wanting to make your computer perform
desktop operations (Word Processing, Spreadsheets etc) then you probably
don't need much command-line knowledge at all.

That said, it is a huge advantage on the administration side to know
commands. You can learn the essentials in detail at
http://www.linuxcommand.org/
