Yes, interesting. I've been going over the school setup piece by piece and can see a few apparent errors ( such as /etc/hosts containing what looks like an incorrect entry in client machines to the server, calling the domain tkja instead of tkja.co.nz as in the LDAP setup... such as a capital letter missing in "People" in a certain configuration file and a few other minor glitches) but I still can't see anything that would result in DNS to the LDAP being dropped when the internet cable is pulled. Whatever I "repair" the problem still remains. I sure wouldn't mind someone adventurous coming in and helping me sort out what the issue is here. Even if I do my own install from scratch, I'd like to at least know what's gone wrong here or thew curiosity will annoy me forever (lest I also hit the same problem again) After talking to Daryl over the 'phone, and through what some have said here, I'm thinking I might migrate (and start over) to NIS. LDAP apparently has a lot of features I'm not even close to wanting to use, which is probably itself complicating matters. In the next setup, I think I'll also add a hardware firewall and a proper internet server setup with the antiporn filters and everything to keep ERO happy next year. Probably the best time to aim for is the term break which is about one to two weeks away now. Lancer.
