[klug] Setting up NIS

Getting confused with the options now.

There are 3 computers running windowsd which will need to access a
shared common directory (student work for windoiws - they need to know
to drag stuff in there if they want it on the other Windows boxes, in
folders of their oen names).

Apart from that, I understand NIS can make it so that wne a student logs
in to any machine it fetches their /home/<name> directory from the main
fileserver for the session as they log in, saving all work to that
remote file server? This would make it look like they were logged in to
the machine they are using but really works more like a think client as
far as desktop settings, saving work and general permissions go.... NIS
is correct for this is it?

The reason I'm asking is because someone I know from WLUG said that NIS
could NOT do dynamically linked /home dirs, which confuses me because a
few people in Klug said it would be ideal.

The set up was pretty much working in LDAP, but has had some annoying
side effects, probably due moree to bad DNS arrangement and thing which
may be a little over my head. The only problem is I only have one more
week to get this set up, including cloning the drives to clients before
school starts. Reality versus fantasy I guess.

I'm not flogging a dead horse if I try to make remote /home dirs using
NIS am I?

As to Samba vs NFS, whether I should do on, the other, or both at the
same time... I wouldn't know how to set up either until I take the
plunge. Just hope more variations / complications don't keep popping up.

Lancer.
