Unfortunately it doesn't work at all on Linux (Pclinuxos) which is my every day computing. I've been looking at microphones on line, and also seen phones for VOIP, and would appreciate opinions/ideas from people who have experience with this ie pros and cons. The Present Set Up Telephone line > modem > IPCOP server > NIC > 5-port switch > PC1 and PC2 and D-Link Wireless Router (WR) > network printer [cabled] and PC3 [cabled] and wifi laptop. Devices connected to the WR all use its LAN jackpoints. All devices on fixed IP addresses. The Fiddle The juggling that Rene suggested was to turn the WR into a sub-network, tweaking a whole lot of settings. That required the cable from the switch to the WR to be moved from a LAN jackpoint, to the Internet jackpoint. That allows the laptop to access the www (and network printer), but (it seems) ‘cuts off’ the network printer, the WR and the laptop from PC1 and PC2, on the ‘main’ LAN. It will ask for a password if needed (e.g. for wpa) and then connect. If the ADSL is not up the network connection should at least be configured via DHCP and work onces the ADSL/PPP is up. If the DHCP server is not starting before the PC (seems unlikely) then maybe you should look at setting the IP address statically. If, for example that shows you the drive is 'sdb', you can list the partitions on it with 'sudo fdisk -l /dev/sdb'. (If that doesn't list any partitions, the drive probably wasn't partitioned which is common with memory sticks.) [1] The mount point can be whatever you like. mkdir a directory and mount the external partition (or drive) on it. Jim [1] And if you want the drive to always turn up as the same device, regardless of the order you plug/unplug other drives, you can investigate writing a udev rule to associate a physical device with a particular logical device. Anyway I have it installed now and just need to do the updates. From googling and reading there seems to be debate about sp1a and whether it's available or not. What I have maybe a patch only, but came from MS so will see! Thanks Rose -- "We don't see things as they are, we see things as we are." Turns out that SP1 was on my WinXP disk, so all up and running, now in the (long) process of installing programmes. Thanks for your help, saved me a lot of angst! Much appreciated. Also learned a major lesson - post here before googling!! If I had followed what I encountered there I'd be tearing my hair out by now!!
