Even though it can see and mount the drive whilst in liveCD mode. So using liveCD mode I used Gparted to delete all partitions from the drive Tried the install again and same problem - no drive shown. So I used Gparted to create partitions manually and then tried the install - same problem no drives shown. So I booted from an older Ubuntu 8.04 CD and installed that without issue. Then, with a fresh install of 8.04 present, used the "upgrade to 9.10" feature from the update manager. 2 hours later after downloads and file updating is done it requires a reboot. No GUI and all sorts of xserver errors - oh yay! ( to be honest I half expected that because I've NEVER had one of those upgrades actually work ) So ran dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and managed to get GUI up as far as the login screen. After logging in it turns to poop with what looks like 4 desktop spaces squashed into one and masses of horizontal lines making anything unreadable. Any ideas as to how to get my screen back? chris From kirjava at gmail.com Thu Dec 3 21:06:08 2009 From: kirjava at gmail.com (Rene Bartosh) Date: Thu Dec 3 21:06:40 2009 Subject: [hblug] upgrading ubuntu to 9.1 In-Reply-To: <4B17676D.8@paradise.net.nz> References: <4B05C270.5030901@orcon.net.nz> <4B05C509.8050107@t94xr.net.nz> <4B065B77.30004@orcon.net.nz> <4B0A5AFF.8070208@orcon.net.nz> <4B17676D.8@paradise.net.nz> Message-ID: Was it 8.04 or 9.04? As far as I am aware you are only supposed to upgrade one Ubuntu version at a time (IE not jump over a version) otherwise things go very pear shaped. Message-ID: <769290.96094.qm@web96104.mail.aue.yahoo.com> hell0 This problem is very similar to my problem with 9.10 internet connection last month. I have installed 9.04 on a colleague's laptop. At work we have wimax network & he can connect to the web. At home he cannot open any web-pages or run updates. Sorry for the lack of information. If you are requesting more let me know as I will be on that box at lunch time. I really hope we can fix this as it's his first time on Linux & he is enjoying it. I read there are some issues with ipv6 & static ip's in 9.04 & 9.10. Is that so? registered linux user # 453724 registered ubuntu user # 17340 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Some good deals can be found there, considering the price of new laptops is so cheap, the price of second hand ones had gone through the floor. Something with second hand laptops is that as a rule most of the batteries are either dead or well on their way out, so you may have to look at replacing the battery if its more than a year or so old. I have a friends PC here that throws a Error 633 every time you try to use the dialup modem. I have removed and reinstalled the modem ( both physically and software ) I have recreated the dialup connection numerous times. The error occurs on any and all COM ports assigned to the modem. I have replaced the modem with a known good unit and repeated all of the above steps. There is no other fax/phone software running ( that I am aware of ) and yet we still get the 633 error ( busy COM PORTS ) as soon as the dial button is clicked. The error is instantaneous - never gets as far as looking for a dial tone. any ideas? cheers Chris From kirjava at gmail.com Sun Dec 20 11:49:31 2009 From: kirjava at gmail.com (Rene Bartosh) Date: Sun Dec 20 11:50:07 2009 Subject: [hblug] OT - Winxp Dialup Dramas In-Reply-To: <4B2C200B.2030005@paradise.net.nz> References: <20091210194527.CPMG10638.mta02.xtra.co.nz@perrys-pc.xtra.co.nz> <4B2C200B.2030005@paradise.net.nz> Message-ID: Sure it sounds like the big red hammer approach, but I would a) ask if ADSL or mobile broadband is an option and if not b) reinstall XP.
