If you have a windows machine you can attach the HDD to (through
native IDE and not through e.g. a USB-> IDE adaptor), then you can use
SpeedFan from http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php to check the SMART
values - net connection required. This will give you an idea as to
whether the drive is on the way out physically.

If that SMART data comes up clean then it may just be the data which
is corrupted. You probably have little choice but to reinstall the
operating system, however there are various tools available in terms
of data recovery if there is also important data on the drive -
grc.com's spinrite comes to mind.
