[hblug] Random lockups with Ubuntu 8.04

After spending several days getting 8.04 64bit sorted ( 32bit FF 
/flash/java/codecs/samba/etc/etc/....) on my main PC it has started to 
randomly lock up.
Mouse and keyboard lights are frozen, cannot give any input at all - 
hard reset required.
Usually happens in conjunction with a mouse-click.

Because no further input is possible after the lockup, I have no way of 
finding out what caused the crash.

So the questions are:
1. Does Ubuntu keep logs of such things anywhere?
2. Is it possible to run some command in the Terminal that will monitor 
the system and perhaps show a readable line or two once the system has 
crashed?
