On my experience over 3 decades the best way to do this is to set the
drive up as a second drive in an old box. On startup, pick up and drop
the box about three inches (hence the old box). Often when an old drive
packs up it is because the bearings have worn over time and seized,
and dropping it jolts it enough to free it. If i remember correctly DEC
or some similar company recommended this method in their manual in
the60's-70's for seized mainframe disks.
The data may not be recoverable, but it does point to the importance of
regular backups. Sell them a Maxtor (Seagate now) USB backup drive. The
Warehouse usually have them priced reasonably.
What you will want to recover:
Documents, email and bookmarks(favorites) in that order are considered
the most important.
