After spending the last two days trying to get samba shares working 
again on 8.04 and getting deeper into the mire, I might have to bring 
the thing along and let some of the young-guns have a go at it.

It was all working nicely until I installed some ubuntu updates a few 
days ago... Although no samba updates were listed, samba has refused to 
work since.
