I am having a problem that after I've been connected to 169_Glouchester, when I try to connect back to the EIT hotspot I am being sent an IP address from 169_Glouchester's range instead of the EIT range. Whats weird is I am able to connect to the network "EIT Hotspot" fine, and the gateway is set correctly, but the IP I recieve is incorrect for that network. My wireless adaptor is an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 (with the iwl3945 drivers). Manually running "sudo dhclient wlan0" while connected to the EIT Hotspot gives me the address 10.124.1.157, and it appears to actually be giving me that address rather than using the last used one (I'm recieving a DHCPOFFER and DHCPACK for 10.124.1.157 from 202.50.252.230, which seems odd because that address looks like an outside address). I have tried setting a static IP address in the 192.168.53.xxx range, and when I do, I am able to ping the EIT gateway (192.168.53.2) but I am unable to access the internet. I am able to connect to the EIT Hotspot, get an IP on the 192.168.53.xxx subnet and access the internet fine whilst using Windows XP. Anyone know why this doesnt work in Ubuntu 8.04? - Erin -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I've had drives last 2 weeks and die - I've had them last 10 years.. go figure. Things that are not good for your drive. Moisture Shock ( both physical and electrical ) Extremes of temperature Excessive power up/down cycles. I tend to replace drives after 3 years of service - they are so cheap these days - and the hassle of loosing data is just not worth the money or stress.. cheers -- Chris From rmcgillicuddy at orcon.net.nz Tue Aug 12 19:04:42 2008 From: rmcgillicuddy at orcon.net.nz (Rose McGillicuddy) Date: Tue Aug 12 19:04:52 2008 Subject: [hblug] Hard drive faults (Off topic) In-Reply-To: <48A13423.9090801@paradise.net.nz> References: <48A130A8.8040809@orcon.net.nz> <48A13423.9090801@paradise.net.nz> Message-ID: <48A1360A.4080404@orcon.net.nz> chris morris wrote: > You're average hard drive has a running life of 3-5 years ( going by my > own experience ) but they can fail for no apparent reason at any time. > I've had drives last 2 weeks and die - I've had them last 10 years.. go > figure. > > Things that are not good for your drive. > Moisture > Shock ( both physical and electrical ) > Extremes of temperature > Excessive power up/down cycles. > > I tend to replace drives after 3 years of service - they are so cheap > these days - and the hassle of loosing data is just not worth the money > or stress.. > > cheers > Thanks - I've been goggling, as was wondering if I had done something to cause the failure, but it seems not I hope. The drive is four, possibly five or six years old. One thing that does concern me as a possible cause is this - it was a dual boot system with WinXP and Pclinuxos 2007. Had been dual booting about four years probably, certainly three. In Windows I often got a message on booting up that new hardware was being detected and did I want to install it. This related to the on board winmodem and came about after I disabled it to use an external serial modem for a time. If I was browsing in Windows it would pop the "connect to" window up from time to time, which I just used to cancel as am on broadband. I have another article from the paper which is quite old about someone doing PC recycling in the HB - not sure if it the same guy. He has a different end game (making money) than we did (giving away free or cheap Linux PCs) but the side effect is the same - disposing of the unusable waste in an environmentally friendly manner. What we should investigate is if we could somehow get council funding for environmental disposal of e-waste - if only for the sake that I imagine a lot of people here probably dump lots of stuff in the landfill from time to time (I know I do - currently got a few old CRTs lined up for the pollution heap^H^H^H^H land fill). Also I have some papers to sign to update our details in the Hasting District Council clubs database - remind me to find them at the next meeting. -- >From Rene Bartosh (Gmail account) Personal: http://kirjava.net.nz/ Work: http://eksion.net/ From rmcgillicuddy at orcon.net.nz Wed Aug 20 18:20:17 2008 From: rmcgillicuddy at orcon.net.nz (Rose McGillicuddy) Date: Wed Aug 20 18:20:24 2008 Subject: [hblug] A memory question (Off topic) Message-ID: <48ABB7A1.8020909@orcon.net.nz> Hi All I'd like to upgrade the RAM in my PC.
