I go with VLC media player - seems to play anything.
Pidgin for instant messaging without the bloat of official clients
UltraVNC for remote access - although sometimes just RDP
Foxit reader for PDFs - alot less bloated than acrobat reader
Speedfan for temp. monitoring and SMART info from HDD's
Tools I often use but do not install - magical jellybean keyfinder -
to view keys
cpu-z from cpuid.org - to find info about CPU/mobo/RAM
