0k - another crazy question.
what do you mean 'uname -r'?
as i already have build essential, & there are 12 linux-headers listed am i meant to guess which header i need then install it.?.

its asking for autoconf.. which is a program.

If you type 
sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r` 
it will install what you need
