[hblug] samba win2k issues

My win2k box cannot access the samba shares on this kubuntu64 box.
I've set the username and password to be exactly the same on both machines.
All machines are using the same workgroup.
When browsing the lan from win2k I can see this kubuntu64 box but when I 
try to access it win2k prompts for username and password. It does not 
accept any that I've tried.
Win2k can however access the samba shares on my other (32bit) linux box 
( same username and pw )

So far googling this problem has only told me that I must have the same 
usernames and passwords.

any ideas?
