Tried to manually stop ntpd as you noted.

It comes back with "service" being an unknown command.

If I enter at the terminal:
root at ipcop:~ # ntpdate usenet.net.nz

I get:
Looking for host usenet.net.nz and service ntp
host found : usenet.net.nz
19 Jan 00:44:39 ntpdate[14425]: the NTP socket is in use, exiting


Is this referring to the Gui still trying to synch or is this something 
else conflicting?
