That is the modern way of doing it. I actually forgot that the
/etc/hosts file had been broken up and put into /etc/hosts/ directory.
Age and too long running Linux.
In the first example 0.0.0.0 tells the IPCop box to look for
ads.doubleclick.com at this TCP/IP address, which doesn't exist
anywhere. That keeps certain sites banned from your network. A business
can use it to ban Trademe at work.

By the way you can use Adblock Plus as a personal solution. You can
prevent the browser requesting ads from any given website. Adblock Plus
is a recommended Firefox Addon.

This makes a better personal solution because some family members may
get the pip that you are blocking their access to certain sites,
irrespective of which sites they are.
