That seems to fit with the advice orcon give when I ring the help desk. 
  While you wait for an actual person to talk to, they advise to turn 
the modem off for 15 secs then turn back on, as this fixes x % of 
connection problems.  Often it doesn't do it for me though.

I'll try the fan thing first, as there does seem to be fewer issues in 
the cool of morning and later evening.
