I used kppp, and checked username and password.  I assumed modem would 
be connected to COM1/ttsy0 and selected that, although the preselect 
came up as /dev/modem.  I'll go back and try different settings. 
Attempting to explore the forums but connection is very erratic with 
many disconnects.  Frustrating!  Even as I write this I see the power 
light has gone to red, so I will have to wait to send.

Would it be worthwhile buying a different modem, rather than go with the 
free one that came with the broadband offer?
