[hblug] dial up connection kubuntu

Hi all

I have a broadband connection but recently frequent disconnection 
problems.  I had to have my first modem replaced as it was faulty, and 
this one seems to be going the same way.  Dynalink RTA 1320.  Rang orcon 
and arranged for it to be sent away, and a dial up connection in the 
interim.  To avoid changing the set up on main box thought I would 
configure kubuntu on another old machine.  I have done so after having 
to make a new file /etc/resolv.conf, but when attempting to connect get 
the following;" pppd daemon died unexpectedly! exit status 1
see man pppd ...."
That talks about fatal errors, which does not mean a great deal to me. 
Can anyone help?  Thanks
