Have just sorted my ubuntu out on a laptop with a winmodem.
Is yours a hardware or a winmodem? You may have to install drivers as I did,
works sweet now.

Does anyone know how to create a dialup connection on U/K/Xbuntu?
Xbuntu can see the modem and I've configured the ph-#/login/password etc
but how does one actually get the thing to produce a dialer on screen so
I can hit the connect button?

Chris

/dev/modem _should_ work, else /dev/ttyS0 for com1, /dev/ttyS1 for com2
etc, but i guess you already know those.

and you can connect from the same network config dialog.

The xbuntu network config dialog doesn't have any way to actually
"connect" that I can see.
Maybe its different from the Ubuntu one.

Ok maybe its different from Ubuntu then.
Applications>system>networking gives available connections ( in my case
just the modem ) tick that and go to Properties - setup
phone-number/login/password and tick "enable this connection" and close
the properties dialog.
The modem is now ticked and enabled but no way to make it do anything..

Maybe something else needs to be installed?

chris.

works)

pppon gives "no such file or directory" as does sudo pppon
wvdial gives "cannot open /dev/modem: no such file or directory."
sudo wvdial gives the same.
If I change the modem settings to /dev/ttyS1 /S2 /S3 etc, wvdial still
tries to open /dev/modem

maybe the modem is stuffed - I'll try another one tomorrow.
