I've started getting this recently too with some emails.
It's actually at the recieving end Chris. Either the font used doesn't
support the characters or there is a mismatch in encoding. Anyway it
seems to occur with smart quotes.
My solution will be to live with it until my next OS upgrade where i am
happy with my new email client.
I am not completely convinced that it has to do with what this guy is
talking about.
