I assume you mean the boot splash and not the KDE splash.
I must have forgetten to write a disclaimer. :D
One thing to try (but this time I will say might break your system :D )
Log into a command line on the system and run:
WARNING: THIS COMMAND WILL REPLACE YOUR X CONFIGURATION!
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
WARNING: THIS COMMAND WILL REPLACE YOUR X CONFIGURATION!
Follow the instructions (use the "nv" driver).
For the resolution selection thing for me it had 1024x768 as the
defualt, select and push the space key I think on the right
configuration screen should enable higher resolutions.
This should put the "nv" driver (the open source driver for nvidia cards) back.
Also, I should have said earlier:
NEVER CHANGE/OVERWRITE SYSTEM FILES WITHOUT MAKING A BACKUP OF THEM
FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is very important to remember. Always remember this. Always.
And also have another read of the instructions:
K Menu->Help->Kubuntu Desktop Guide->5. Configuring Your
System->Hardware->3D Nvidia Video Card Driver

As I said the instructions are from the Kubuntu Desktop Guide.
Blame the Ubuntu Documentation Team for any problems with those
instructions ;). But it worked for me :D

This is correct for Dapper(6.06), but in Edgy Beta i think they use
upstart now, so I have no idea about edgy(7.04)
