Pop your CD into a linux box and in a term type:
$ md5sum /dev/hdc
(where hdc is the cd drive)
compare it with this md5sum
093e538fc27aa14d171ae982d5ebe05f kubuntu-6.10-beta-desktop-amd64.iso
5bad812063cd880a1755f1e2431ee3e4 kubuntu-6.06.1-desktop-amd64.iso
If you get a discrepancy in that big hex number you have a bad iso.
Navigate to your ISO download folder and type:
$ md5sum kubuntu*.iso

Problems with 64bit installs.
Each program has to be rewritten by the authors to utilize the 64bit
code. Large programs have not completed this rewrite and will break if
run in a 64bit OS. There are cludge workarounds that have various levels
of success (most run the 32bit program version in a 32 bit chroot jail).
A couple of programs that fall into this category:
OpenOffice.org, Firefox, Thunderbird, and Seamonkey
So by all means experiment with a 64bit install. But i doubt you will
find it ready for mainstream use yet.
***
You will need an SMP kernel for your Dual Core box, regardless if it is
a 32bit or 64bit OS installed. I don't know about ()buntu builds, the
SMP kernel may be the default.
