Start here:
http://www.tomshardware.com/
to sort out what quality/type of hardware you want. Remember most Linux
drivers are written once the hardware is available to the driver authors
- most Windows drivers are written as the hardware is being developed,
thus is available from day one.

Then go here
http://www.pricespy.co.nz/
and look for a place that stocks what you want at a reasonable price.

Many will recommend this or that specific place. Some will deliver box
builds freight free. I even found one that insisted on building the box
and testing it for nothing to save on freight (they would normally have
charged for the build).

Laptops are a different kettle of fish. My bosses Acer boots Knoppix
fine (sorry, cant tell you the model), but i didn't check the WIFI. He's
a tolerant man but when i told him i'd installed linux on it on April
fools day at first he didn't believe me. Then he moved the mouse and
was looking at KDE, he thought i really had wiped Windows. He's still
working on how he will get me back in four months!

Anyway to test a laptop for Linux, take Knoppix into the shop and try it
on each model, Dick Smith have a WiFi system running. Others will as
well.
