There is also a third variant, Xubuntu. Xubuntu is built around the
Xfce Desktop environment and tends to be a little "lighter weight"
which makes it well suited to older or low-end machines.

As Chris mentioned that KDE has a bit more eye candy than Gnome,
Gnome has more than Xfce. :-) But they are all functional. And
regardless of the desktop, you can run applications of the "other"
type(s), it just means more libraries get loaded behind the scenes.
If you have time to experiment I'd suggest trying them all before
deciding which one you like (and which perform well on your hardware).
