Should assert here that if your internet connection is anything short of
an Ethernet, Frame Relay or DDS Service, this is almost certainly a
necessity. Mail seen to be received via SMTP from 'customer' IP address
ranges are invariably either identified as SPAM or at least, 'up-scored'
to make your spam rating higher.
I would tentatively consider Fixed-IP DSL/Cable services as 'OK' for
direct SMTP but you need to keep an eye on things. Some RBL type services
(SORBS comes to mind) are overly zealous at identifying customer IP ranges
and offering them as 'high spam probability sources'.
By using your ISP's SMTP you keep your nose keen, as ISPs are not usually
guilty of relaying UCE to anyone on purpose (and where spam is relayed
this way, there's usually a clearly documented way of getting hold of the
ISP to have the offender tracked down.)
In short, if you're on Dynamic IP DSL/Cable/Wireless/Dialup you should
most certainly be using your ISPs SMTP server as a 'smarthost'.
Mark.
