Ah I see, you're on the digest. YES you should definitely edit out
everything that you're not directly replying to!

I'm not sure exactly how the mailing list handles threads, but you
could probably also send a new mail with "Re: Subject-to-reply-to" as
the subject and have it work just as well. Could somebody confirm this
for me? I usually just use the reply button.
