I have had similar trouble with crossed cable. 
At a Uniforum conference once, I could not get a demo of an LTSP thin
client to work with my laptop. Fortunately one of the people there had a
spare switch and 2 normal cables and everything worked fine.

So my advice is to get a small hub or switch ...
