[AuckLUG] eth0 cable problems

Hi All,
      Start of latest problem. I have two computers hooked up with a nul 
ethernet cable connected
directly ethernet port to ethernet port. This lashup has worked on 
exactly this setup in the past.

How however ,I can ping to the NEC Laptop....

But I cannot ssh or scp the laptop. I get...

Over and over.

NOW.. When I try to ping my desktop from the laptop I get...

 From 198.168.0.250 icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable   and on and on.

The laptop has other problems ,more of which later ,but right now I need 
to backup to my desktop
and I have used this method before with good effect.

Any clues out there ?
