Righty-o then - lets back the truck up a bit

I gather LinuxMINT is a debian derivative  - and I presume that the box 
is running X (ie has a grahpical user environment)

Do you have  a file manager installed - if so, open it up and browse to 
/var/log and see what you can see.

You should be able to then click on a log file and have it open in a gui 
environment.

Places to look are
/var/log/messages
/var/log/syslog
are the most likely starting points

If you insist on doing it at the command line ;-) then less or more are 
your friends (i.e less /var/log/messages will show you the file  
/var/log/messages a screen full at a time - if the file exists of course)
