[AuckLUG] HP Color LaserJet 5M ...

I have recently bought one of these secondhand, after consulting
Linuxprinting database and finding that it works perfectly with Linux. 
However!  Here is my sorry tale of woe.  I'd be delighted to be told that
I'm a blithering idiot and should do "this" and "this" and "that" and it
will work.

I'm using LinuxMINT and these are the steps I took.  Please forgive the
detail but it may be easier for you to work out what I did incorrectly.

Click on New Printer - Ready
Leave Local or detected printer chosen
Click on  Forward
Click on Manufacturer and choose HP and the Color Laser 5M
Click on Driver and choose cljet5
Click on Forward
Type printer description ColorLaserJet 5M
Click on Apply
Printer icon shown as  Color LaserJet 5M - Ready
Double click on printer icon to get Job Status
Click on this File - Print (this file)
Job No. appears briefly and then disappears
Data light on Printer does not come on.
No printing takes place

Try again:

Click on printer icon with right mouse button and choose Properties
Click on Driver
Change Driver to hpljs
Close
Double click on printer icon to get Job Status
Click on this File - Print (this file)
Job No. appears briefly and then disappears
Data light on Printer does not come on.
No printing takes place

Click on New Printer - Ready
Choose "Use another printer by specifying a port:Printer Port: HP Color
LaserJet 5M USB #1 (HP Color LaserJet 5M)"
Click on  Forward
Click on Manufacturer and choose HP and the Color Laser 5M
Click on Driver and choose cljet5
Click on Forward
Type printer description ColorLaserJet 5M
Click on Apply
Printer icon shown as  Color LaserJet 5M-1 - Ready
Double click on printer icon to get Job Status
Click on this File - Print (this file) of 1335 bytes
Job No. appears
Data light on Printer commences flashing (time now 16:26)
Job No disappears
Data light continues flashing (time now 16:29)
Data light still flashing (time now 16:39)

At this stage I abandoned LinuxMINT and booted into WindowsXP on my dual
boot system.

A similar size file printed through WindowsXP within seconds.

What is strange, though, is that the file generated in GEdit also printed.

I then rebooted into LinuxMINT again.

So, again, requested this file to print.
This time even the data light refused to blink!
Turned printer off and then on again.
Job shows in job list but data light does not blink and nothing happens
Cancel job

Click on printer icon and choose Properties
Change driver to hpljs
Click on Print
Job details shown
Data light does not come on.
Cancel job

Decide to seek help from ALUG

Fortunately the printer is far to large and heavy for me to pick up and
throw through the window :-)
