I've got some instructions on using a old copy of redhat which were
published in a book called "Linux Toys". I think pretty much any
distro will do. All it needs to do is run X - no Window manager is
necessary as you don't really interact with a photo frame. So
something that can display images - a quick search on google turns up
"display" which can be used to just specify a directory which just
does a slide show through it.

I think you usually just unscrew the screen, and fold the keyboard
behind the monitor without pulling at any of the cables.

Once you've got the basics it should be relatively trivial to do
something like plug in a network cable and have it pull images off a
website or, if you're after something more than just a simple photo
frame, you could even get it to stream music to a stereo though
interface issues start coming in here...
