Have you tried using a live cd to boot your laptop instead of a rescue
disk, rescue disks don't usually provide you with many tools. A live cd
will have burning software and provide you with an x environment without
having to worry about your existing install, it should also autodetect
your existing partitions and mount as necessary. Try knoppix or ubuntu.
