For what it's worth, I'd recommend you download Firefox and install it
locally in your home directory. You won't be able to automatically update
it with Apt if you do this, but that's the only drawback.

That sound's like the problem to me, too. I'll bet that the xtra site has
different pages based on which browser visits the site. Their code didn't
recognize the user agent string, so it complained.
