Here's the rub ... you should get a response from the gateway

What is your system's IP address?
- Check that it is 192.168.1.18  ( use ifconfig -a )
- check that it has a netmask of 255.255.255.0 (should be this to go
with the 192.168.1.x ip address)
- check cables to the gateway

Go no further till you can ping the gateway
