[AuckLUG] /bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off

I suspect it has something do with with the boot loader settings, if you
upgrade the kernel and or do something that changes the boot loader it can
break things...check that your root partition is on hda1 ... if you
partitioned it, it maybe different, mine is hda3.  At the boot prompt, press
`e` to edit and try changing the root= parameter
