It's about now that I should point out my own inadequacies. I could
never get gentoo installed on a machine no matter how many times I've
tried - something always failed. So I can't really offer too much of
an opinion except that I've tried Ubuntu and while being sort of
alright for someone who I'd normally recommend a Mac to, it's
definitely not my OS of choice. Please note: I know Ubuntu is powerful
and all the rest of it but it's just not my OS of choice. I'm pretty
happy with Debian.

I never had a problem installing Gentoo onto a machine - there is nothing two cpu's cant fix ... and I did it lots and lots and lots and lots ...and ..... lots and lots .. and aargh !
YOU have to follow the instructions CLOSELY - but it does actually work (once you've worked out what they left out of the instructions, just to confuzzle people).

Lets see ... one hour for the download, two hours for the install, six hours for the compile, .... two hours for the install, six hours for the compile ... two hours to download an older version cause modular X doesnt work on opterons ..... (oh sorry - that's right, they fixed that now) ... half an hour for the install and three hours for the compile cause I'm getting better ... ok ..fine ..its all now working ....

anyone wanna compile OOffice ? ok ... lets not be too dumb today ...

so ... now lets do an emerge update .... AARGH > modular X ... ok ... format hard drives, and start again .....

[ apologies to Kevin! ] .. but I do love Gentoo .. really, really I do ... I actually prefer it to Ubuntu ...... but I might have another go when 2007.0 comes out ...

lets see - experiences ..

Installs Ubuntu ... kde crashes ... installs quanta ..ok .. doesnt install quanta .. install sound instead ..ok ..doesnt install sound .... maybe its the sound card ...ok ..its the Dell SB look-alike that's the problem ... stupid me for buying CHEAP sound card for a server/workstation

Installs Studio 64 on the dual opteron ... set up repositories, and installs kde, reboots and logs into a kde session .... kde doesnt crash (YAY) ... sound doesnt work, but hey, we know what the problem is ... installs quanta, installs bc, installs Xterm (ya didna know Xterm wasnt there didya!), logs in as root, installs SUN software ... turns machine off, turns machine on .... installs Apache2, installs BlueJ ..hey ..it all still works ... , pulls out the Dell sound card (which doesnt work) .. installs M-Audio card .. runs Envy24 ... no configurations needed - audio works perfectly ... installs Office (there, that didnt hurt at all ..) ... goes through the repositories to see if there is anything else that might be fun to install ... installs TV card ... ok ... Awtv works, kdetv sux (dont understand how to configure the video plugins)

installs XP, and reboots with Studio 64, play with grub, dual boot now working ... simple ... installs gnash ... still no good ... ok ... 99/100 is pretty good ... gets tired of rebooting into XP to use Flash .. wondering if should install the xen kernel ... installs xen kernel ...aargh .. need to read a book to find out how to use it ... goes back to the multimedia kernel ...

My need to look at Gentoo is distinctly taking a back seat .... distinctly using PC as if it were an MS machine ... turns it on, does work, turns it off again ... I'd leave it on, but that uses power ....

yanno ... its funny how Ubuntu and Studio 64 are both actually Debian ..... (grins!).
