It's about now that I should point out my own inadequacies. I could never get gentoo installed on a machine no matter how many times I've tried - something always failed. So I can't really offer too much of an opinion except that I've tried Ubuntu and while being sort of alright for someone who I'd normally recommend a Mac to, it's definitely not my OS of choice. Please note: I know Ubuntu is powerful and all the rest of it but it's just not my OS of choice. I'm pretty happy with Debian.
