[AuckLUG] Good ISP for Linux Users - part 2

Thank you for your replies :)

In general, I've come to expect ISPs to offer poor support most of the
time. I've learned this from experience in the US and in Malaysia. Based
on the stories I've been reading in various newsgroups, forums, and even
here, I think it's the same here. Having a competitive market helps this
situation a lot, though.

So, I don't worry much when I hear support horror stories.

When we do get good support, I think the credit belongs to that specific
technician rather than to his/her employer. I usually try to get the mobile
number of a good technician, when possible. Heck... if it came to it, I'd
pay the guy extra myself to keep my Internet connection working without
problem :)

It turns out that Quicksilver is actually Woosh's wired service (ref:
http://www.quicksilver.co.nz/products/adsl-broadband.php). Their service
seems okay, but their 20Gb plan is too small for me, their 50Gb is too much
and costs $40 more than the 30Gb plan from Orcon. They charge $9.95 per
500Mb to "top-up". I think I'm going to keep their wireless plan, though.

I think you have probably had a positive experience with their support
team. That's good to hear, but I've read through their "Usage Policy" (ref:
http://www.xnet.co.nz/legal/terms.shtml). I found the section entitled
"Excessive Use" especially interesting. Strict interpretation of some of
these policies could be considered harmful to our community (the Linux
Users' Group), the FLOSS movement, and the Internet community in general. I
will not be considering Xnet for my Internet service needs.

P.S.:
Are you wondering how I can transfer so much? Believe it or not, most of it
is legitimate. When I'm back up and running full-speed, I'll be maintaining
my own copies of Knoppix-CD, Knoppix-DVD, Knoppix-Games, Edubuntu, Ubuntu,
Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Fedora Core, OpenOffice.org, and a bunch of other smaller
things. I'll send an email when I'm ready and offer free burning services
(bring your own blanks :))

We have streaming radio constantly and streaming video often. Democracy
Player (ref: http://www.getdemocracy.com) is a lot of fun :)

I'm not sure how much my work contributes to the data load. The files are
much smaller but I keep transferring them back and forth repeatedly after
making small changes to one program or another. Occasionally, I have to
dump an entire database and transfer it.
