Can you show us your exact command line and last few lines of the output including all errors? For instance "tar" should be clever enough to handle all strange characters in file names and shouldn't return any error. "rsync" is even better in this job. If both fail there may be a problem with your disk or filesystem. Does output of command "dmesg" reveal any hints? Have you rebooted recently? Dare to reboot now? The filesystem may be checked and fixed during reboot. Or you may explicitly want to run "fsck" on it. Or it's something completely different but without the actual errors it's hard to guess. Michal
