I thought that the CD key used had to agree with the one on the actual CD (but what do I know anyway?) Well there is a label with a CD key and I am pretty sure I have a WINXP "Backup" somewhere (probably the coaster I use under my beer :-) ) , so its nice to know I can at least reinstall if I need to. Still it would be nice to not have to go thru the setup process. Actually I seem to have collected a whole host of XP CDs including some Compaq OS CD and Recovery CDs. Not sure why I bothered but I think it was coz my son needed XP on the PC I gave him for Uni. and on the same date daniel pointed out: <Oh,and windows XP doesnt use fat16!> but it seems Trevors treatise might provide the answer there. Its definitely XP Professional...and the CD key underneath bears that out. Anyway thanks to all of you for your responses. I'll take time out to assimilate it all. If it all turns to custard and XP goes AWOL in the process then I sure won't be shedding any tears....no files I want on there anyway Alan
